"Amber" alert after spear-phishing attempt on nuclear plant employees
Attacks on the power grid, banks, and government agencies are common enough now that many reports don't make it to surface of the security news pool, however, this week, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI issued an "amber" alert due to targeted attacks on nuclear plants. That's rather chilling news. According to a report these two agencies issued, attacks consisted of malware targeting nuclear plant employees with a "spear-phishing" campaign. The spoofed emails contained fake resumes from people that appeared to be seeking a job at the nuclear facility. The good news is that attacks focused on the employees's personal devices and had not yet managed to access nuclear plant control systems.
At this time, no official suspects have been announced but the NYT cited anonymous sources that claimed the attacks are similar to those perpetrated by a Russian hacking group known as "Energetic Bear". This group targeted the energy sector in a very similar manner about fie years ago.
